“Wait, Mister!” - Draft Storyboards

OK. After coming up with the story idea, the next step for me is to put it down on paper. That’s where the thumbnails and storyboards come in. As promised, here are some sample panels from my first draft. With the lack of certain standard storyboard features (e.g. text describing actions and sound effects/music), what I have at this stage looks more like a set of glorified thumbnails, or a rather pedestrian comic. Sketching out all those panels (37 in total) took me about a full day to complete. It helped that I already had most of the shots visualized in my head. I then did some minor digital tweaking and coloured some of the panels just to quickly test out a raw colour scheme. Overall, I’m pretty happy with it. I’ll have to get started on the character designs next, do up more colour tests, and piece together a basic animatic to get a grasp of the timing for the short film. The target for the completion of all these components is this coming Wednesday afternoon - in time for my second tutorial. We’ll see how that plan goes…

  1. I like the concept so far.. this is a 3d project rite?? i like the face of the snobbish gentleman.. nice design.. hope you can keep true to the design in 3D.. hehe.. i’m the one getting excited about this.. nice prospect to it..

  2. Thanx shah. Yeah it’s gonna be my 3d short film project. I’m trying to keep the characters simple for obvious reasons and maybe try to give them a more stylized look. I’ll upload some character designs soon. I appreciate your enthusiasm!

  3. Hi Pal, storyboard looking pro man~

About acting, i believe your piece will impact on psychological acting rather than physical acting only. I have to say you are obviously pushing your envelop. Good move, boy.

About camera direction (esp high & low angle, straight on), i believe it will convey the right emotions well. These still shots reminds me of Shyamalan’s strong camera’s shots in “Signs”. They are stationary shots with good tempo yet contain appropriate visual components that drive to a emotional impact. I believe your shots will depends on the final shot’s tempo and your sequence rhythm to make it come true.

About character design, I always like stylized design. It got room for creativity. Not sure u are looking for an identity in your char design. Seems a bit generic. However, i like the look of it.

  4. Hey Isaac! Thanx for the comments. There’s been a bit of change in the storyboards from this version. Basically I took out a few shots that were kinda dragging the pacing a bit. I managed to cut the piece down to about 1min 20sec which is already quite long considering it’s a 1-man job. Glad you like it. I just hope it won’t end up turning the viewer off with sub-par animation in a sub-par story…
