We’re coming up to the last class on the course now, and it’s been pretty intense so far – what with everyone having to partner up, try to be “off book” (i.e. memorize the script) as much as possible, and act out a scene at least once each session. Funnily enough I got assigned 2 scenes with different partners. In addition to “Swingers”, I was handed a scene from “The Savages”. I don’t know if that was intentional, but the instructor seemed to think I could handle it. I must admit, trying to memorize two completely different sets of 4-page scripts is quite the challenge. But it’s fun! That’s what it’s all about, right?

“Introduction to Acting” Class Three.
by Ahmad Al-Mahir on March 18, 2009 at 5:13 pmOn Monday, we looked at subtext again (it was one of the topics covered in the class I missed), were enlightened about the spine of a character, and knowing his/her objective/s in the story and specific scene. This was after we became animals for awhile and did animal things. Amongst the menagerie were quite a few cats, a couple of bears and lionesses, a ground bird and a monkey. I was a peregrine falcon. Obviously. Movies mentioned for acting tips: “On the Waterfront”, “Godfather” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”.
A quick explanation in case my website has become a tad confusing. With this ComicPress theme, I can have a series of comic strips running at the top half of the page with added text accompanying each strip, and have an independent area for more general blog ramblings below it. Of course, instead of comic strips I presently have a run of unrelated sketches, but my primary purpose is to showcase latest artwork without my thoughts getting in the way. That way the audience gets the best of both worlds – if all you care about is the art you can just ogle the top half (there are arrows to navigate across the collection and more links from the top menu) without reading stuff (like this) here at the bottom half. Cool, right?
I’m hoping to update this place with sketches and/or personal commentaries more regularly. Ideally with more images than words. It’s a constant challenge, but lucky for you I haven’t given up yet!
Anyways, there are still a few more minor tweaks to be made but I’m pretty happy with the layout so far. So, what do you think?
I signed up for an introductory acting class which started last week. Its actually quite a challenge for me given my typically reserved nature, but I’m open to ways of improving my art. After all, “an animator is an actor with a pencil” so goes the saying, right? Anyway, the course is eight sessions long, two evenings per week. There’s quite a lot of stuff covered each lesson, and we run through a few exercises during those few hours, judging by how the pace has been set so far. I gotta admit I really enjoyed that first lesson, but had to miss the second due to a major virus outbreak at home. Hopefully I’ll be back for the next one on Monday. There’s also quite a bit of homework to be done between classes, and I’m already falling behind. OK that’s it for now. I’m off to pick an animal and write about it in my actor’s journal!
I know it has been way too long since I put anything up here. I also noticed there are a few dangling threads to be tied up. Just to let you know I’m working on and update and I’ll be back as soon as I can. Hang in there and don’t give up on me yet!
